[ PROJECT UPDATE : MAY 23, 2016 ]

Our SmartRing project has been our most passionate project to date. We have been working around the clock make it a reality; we went as far as creating actual products, demonstrating working prototypes of our SmartRing at tradeshows like CES for more than a year now. We have proven the invention one of the mankind’s smallest and smartest creations. Your contributions helped make this happen.

Unfortunately, though, that is not enough.

Many of you are aware how difficult a manufacturing process can be; from the initial idea, to design, raw material to parts, customization, molding, finishing, engineering, circuits, testing, heating, assembly, certifications, the list goes on and on and on, and each step has its own challenges and issues that arise.

Even though we have a working prototype, and have the parts that make up the ring, it is not as simple as “let’s make it now.” We underestimated how difficult the assembly process could be; the parts are simply too small for us to assemble it in volume.

We conducted extensive prototype manufacturing using computer-aided design and automation in more than three different factories. We concluded that the only way we could produce the ring from start to finish would be as hand-built units, which would be not feasible for mass production. To give you an idea, it would take an engineer approximately 10 hours to manufacture one ring, which is nowhere near as cost-effective as it needs to be to scale to mass production.

We are currently working on splitting up the assembly process to more than one factory with a specialization in a specific area of production and the ability to handle such highly-miniaturized parts. We still believe in the SmartRing as the single best answer to the overwhelming distraction of smartphone notifications. We very much want to bring it to market.

We greatly value your belief in our project, and we hope you will stay with us as we make this happen. As we invent a technology that did not never before existed, there were a lot of variables that would not have been foreseeable.

You have been very supportive with us as we’ve worked through these issues and understand that you hoped to hear that we were nearing mass production. We hope you will continue to support us, but for those that might not be interested in doing so, we will provide you with the option to request store credit at shop.mota.com. Details about this process will be emailed directly to all our crowdfund supporters by May 26, 2016.

Sincerely,

Team Mota

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
